THE OPIFICIO DELLE PIETRE DURE (in competition)
A History of Excellence

Written and directed by: Massimo Beccattini, pictures: Duccio Brunetti - Dulio Ringressi, production: MEDIATECA REGIONALE TOSCANA, duration: 40', 2006
The film evokes the birth of the Grand-ducal Manufactures in Florence in the second half of XVI century, on the orders of Grand-Duke Cosimo I Medici, and their progressive transformation into restoration laboratories.
Beside the new monumental décor, the late 16th century saw the development of so-called "Florentine pietre dure mosaic", which was to dominate the European scene for centuries to come.
After the Medici dynasty came to an end, their successors of the House of Lorraine continued to sponsor the activities of the workshops.
After Italian unification, the Opificio, now deprived of the support and patronage of an aristocratic court, was threatened by closure. At last, towards the end of the 19th century, the Opificio placed its centuries old skills at the service of conservation and restoration of works of art. The disastrous flood in 1966 was a tragic event for Florence, but a crucial stage in the development of the Opificio; it was on that occasion that the Institute demonstrated its potential and, with the support of restorers and scholars worldwide, took a decisive step forward, placing it in the vanguard of restoration techniques.
